I'm going to LONDON from April 7 to April 17 (Or 16th?). Yay! I'm sending Bex and Ireland emails about it tonight.

10:20 pm - It's alright 'cause I'm saved by the bell...

Yes I have been watching that (seasons one AND two) on DVD for the last three days. Merry Christmas! My favorite day of the year is Christmas Eve, and this December 24th perhaps even exceeded my expectations. We had our usual annual Christmas Eve party with all the 'ricans and other whatnot, and after a few rounds of martinis and beer the adults pulled out the instruments and we parranda'd. That was loads of fun, lots of silly dancing and etc. We had three Jews at the party, my dearest Helen, the lovely Matthew, and Hershel who was quite a hit. And Christmas was lovely, I got a digital camera which I am obsessed with and now I will take pictures and post them on here. I also got Saved by the Bell, can you tell?

09:10 am - In the meadow we can build a snow man

So yesterday I went to New York, but sadly I didn't see Laurie, but knowing I was only a couple of miles away from her was absolutely lovely! And I reaffirmed that my dream job is to be the museum director of the MoMA (that's how I'll make my fortune, too). And we went to Rockefeller center to watch the ice skaters, when one man proposed to his girlfriend, and we all started cheering. Christmas in New York is the best type of Christmas ever. Then we went to Saks and saw the gorgeous dresses we'd never be able to afford. My favorite cost $6390.

And then, I came home and I got into Yale!

08:17 am - The winter is a marshmallow world

Time for me to update. Know why? Because there is no school today! I'll outline why living in the D.C. Metro area is an amazing deal.
1. We get nice hot summers. So good for going to the pool and whatnot.
2. Fall is absolutely gorgeous here.
3. We get snow in the winter. Like last night, about 3 inches of snow.
4. And when we get snow, the school systems here are wimps, so they cancel snow even though the conditions on the roads are survivable.
5. So therefore, because I live here, I am not in school right now. And that's why I can update!

Yesterday at school most teachers kept assuming we wouldn't have school, so I got into that three-day weekend mentality much to early, so when I got home I just fell asleep. It was a nice nap. I didn't plan on doing any homework, but I did end up doing my math because I felt like the snow would want to spite me by not coming if I didn't do my math homework. And I made chocolate covered pretzels. So all in all, yesterday was very much a lazy-winter-break kind of day.

And my future events for this weekend: I have 1. a college interview tomorrow for Wash U (in St Lou, I like the rhyming) and 2. babysitting. Sunday I am in major need of Christmas shopping. Tonight I was supposed to go to my friend Anna's for something we'd like to call Real Life. There's this Jesusish club at our school called Young Life that some of our friends are in so we're making a parody called Real Life. Really, the only reason we're going it is because everyone wants to go to see Anna's huge Chevy Chase house.

I feel like making snow angels and having snow ball fights. Remember the one at Laurie's in NY, we had to scrape off snow from the cars? Natalia creamed us. Despite the very little accumulation of snow, that was probably the best snow ball fight I've ever been in.

And now I'm feeling nostalgic.

My plans for today: eat chocolate covered pretzels, shower, work on college applications, paint and do other art homeworky stuff, be lazy and have a magnificent time doing so.

You guys should come to DC to visit me soon. We're supposed to get a lot of snow this winter, if that's an incentive at all.

11:10 am - there's always money in the banana stand!

Happy Thanksgiving! There is no school so that means it's time to update. A nice pattern I've picked up, eh? Update on my life. I've been busy for real this time. We put on our production of Pride and Prejudice the last two weekends so I was always at school rehearsing. And then my mom let me host the cast party after closing night last Saturday which was intense. That was about 60 kids, and then about 35-40 of them sleptover. So basically I didn't sleep until 6 am and even then for only a couple of hours. But it was loads of fun, I stayed up all night dancing and then talking and then watching movies and then playing card games. Oh, and eating the ten trillion tons of food people brought. Our show was a success too, mostly... except on closing night when the lights went crazy on us. Yes, I freaked out. And what else? Oh school, lots of work, Ms. Solomon-the-IB-coordinator pushed back all of our due dates so that was nice. Matt came home... Tuesday? which is good. Except he was really supposed to come home Wednesday but then got his flight moved up a day and was going to surprise me. But then he called me at midnight on Tuesday and said that his dad wouldn't let him drive over so late so he couldn't surprise me. Just my luck. Then I didn't drive yesterday so he could pick me up after-afterschool (we watched this movie called Valentin for Spanish honor society, it's really cute, go watch it!) but his car broke down on the way there. And then that night we went to see Harry Potter (which I sadly hadn't seen yet because my mom wouldn't let me see it last weekend because of cast party, so I was really looking forward to it) and we were halfway through the movie and someone pulled the fire alarm. Just my luck. I'm the luckiest person in the world.

11:56 am - Desi sweeps the nation.

No school today AGAIN! But not because of Jewish holidays; this is just a "professional day" as MCPS calls it, I call it I-Love-MoCo day. But, to keep up with my pattern of Jewish holidays, Sukot was a few days ago. Jews tried to explain it to me, its like a harvest festival tradition and they make little fairy huts out of twigs. I added in the fairy part, though. Anyhow, some responses: I'm jealous Bex that you say Bon Jovi live. And Chipotle- well thats this chain of restaurants, fast food you could say but not gross and greasy (although I do enjoy grease), and they make these gigantic burritos. Go to Chipotle.com if you'd like to become really hungry. Anyhow, Chipotle is sweeping the nation.

My life, in list form:

1. Yesterday night/this morning took pictures of my art work so I can make them into slides. So later today I'm going to Penn Camera. Chaching.
2. And why do I need these slides? For college applications, of course! I really need to send in my November 1st ones soon, that's for Yale and Emory. And I also have to write another essay for Yale. I already wrote my Ruta Quetzal one, I am quite a fan. It's not very cheesy, though, so it isn't as sentimental as I could get.
3. I really want to go to Yale. Incredibly much so. I went to the Yale meeting this week and it was glorious. But I'm going to be severely disappointed when I don't go there. Oh well.
4. We went to Lake Needwood park on Thursday for our IB Group 4 physics fieldtrip. Our educational portion consisted of me stranded on a rock in the water dumping pennies into our aluminum foil boats. But then afterwards was incredibly relaxing and fun- me and two friends FINALLY hiked around the entire lake and we played frisbee and I ate a pizza.
5. I love drama, what can I say.
6. Lots of schoolwork, as usually, especially for this weekend. It'll be fun!
7. I am voracious. (SAT word! Yesssss!) I think I'll go eat.

Oct. 13th, 2005

10:55 am - Oh we're half way there oh-oh living on a prayer...

Sometimes, you just need cheesy Bon Jovi songs.

Now I'm finding this to be a trend, updating on Jewish Holidays. Happy Yom Kippur and not eating food all day, Jews! This is perhaps my favorite of all Jewish holidays because since I'm at home I tend to bake so much food, perhaps to compensate for all the food not consumed by the Jewish community out there in the world. But anyhow, I am devoting today to working on art for art class and it will be swell.

Let's talk about my life! Things I am tired of talking about: 1. homecoming 2. SATs and other standardized tests 3. World War I (history class). So I will effectively avoid those topics, even though 1 is impending and 2 just occurred this past weekend. Luckily, 3 is long gone.

Matt came home this weekend, which was good. I had a very fun weekend but then going back to school on Monday made me remember that High School is Lame. For example, college would probably be much better. Another example, English Club kids are way cooler than the general high school crowd. While I like my friends a whole lot, everyone else is... the same? Maybe?

Anyhow, so highlights of the weekend include going to Price Club with Matt's dad, playing Scrabble and Jenga, watching the Redskins lose (can you BELIEVE I watched a football game?- what a disgrace, or an opprobrium, if you'd like an SAT word for that), eating Chipotle (I don't think Chipotle has hit the international market yet, but my Americans might know it), watching favorite scenes of Good Will Hunting. Classic.

And this week, I've babysit and gone to drama. What else is new. We're working on building the set and hopefully we'll be almost done by Saturday. yay. And I love drama, one of the best parts about high school, but it's not the same as last year yet. But I do love being a Head Cheese (Monterey Jack, more specifically), and sitting at the Table of Power and delegating tasks.

Well, my life can only amuse people for so long (if it even amused you at all). So I'll wrap it up. Don't eat food, Jews.

Oct. 4th, 2005

09:17 pm - l'shanah tovah, everyone.

I haven't updated since summer. I'm sorry. Life, as usual, is hectic, but now it's worse than ever. Studying for SATs, college applications, billions of english journals, babysitting. (Making money is good.) I wish I had something profound to say. But it is 9:21 and I just watched Gilmore Girls and I didn't have school today and I spent a large portion of the day taking a practice SAT and reading Madame Bovary. So basically that all means my mind is frozen and I can't compute things correctly anymore. Next time, I'll actually write about something worthwhile, that's my usual promise.

Aug. 27th, 2005

01:52 am

Forgive me if lots of the pictures don't upload, I hope they do.

Well, now that the summer is practically over, I'll tell you all about it.. I know it shouldn't work this way, I should have update earlier, but that's the way it's been going here in Maryland, kind of living life and then actually thinking about it after it happens. I'm vowing to keep in touch more, definitely update more on here to have this connection with you kids. This will be a sort of Desi's-Summer-in-Pictures, because everyone loves pictures. I'll start way at the beginning, in June, after school ended (June 14th). The next day, two of my cousins arrived to DC- they came all the way from Puerto Rico to hang out with Alex and I. Meet Karla and Camila:

Karla annd Camila are half sisters. Karla is 13 and Camila is 9. Alex (my sister) and Karla are good friends, and Camila was my companion for those two weeks I guess. There were times when the age difference (8 years) was very obvious, especially when she kept chanting, "You kiss a boy!" incessantly, kind of made me realize how old I am. And then I realized how young Alex still acts. Yep, and she turned 16 this summer. I'm resigned to that. But anyhow, I introduced these Ricans to s'mores, chocolate covered pretzels, and paddleboating in the Tidal Basin in DC.

We left for Puerto Rico all together (as in Alex, Karla, Camila and me) on June 27, or at least we were supposed to until our flight got cancelled and we had to get our mom to pick us up from Dulles. So we didn't actually leave until the next day. But Puerto Rico still managed to be wonderful, as usual. I missed it sooo much because I didn't go last year, due to the Ruta. Which was a good excuse, but I hadn't seen most of my relatives for two years. And I am really attached to my cousins, the babies at least, they are all in their cutest stages ever.

1. Bebe, as we call her, but her real name is Maria de los Angeles, almost 3 years old. She barely talks, but makes the cutest faces and noises. Counts like this: un do te, un do te, repeatedly. Hasn't learned any other numbers. Doesn't understand the concept of hide-and-go-seek; always asks her mom where her sister Angelica is. Once peed on me, but I forgave her because she is that cute.
2. Angelica Maria, 4 years old, Bebe's big sister. She does all the talking for her and Bebe. She is very bossy, likes to get her way. But she is also very pretty. In this picture she is standing with my friend Helen who came to PR for ten days. Helen looks more like these two blonde cousins than I do; she looked exactly like Bebe as a baby. Angelica always says stuff like "yo sabo."
3. Daniela, 3 and a few months, the cutest/prettiest of all of them at this stage. Is always shy at first but then ends up talking ceaselessly. She is very affectionate if she likes you; she'll hold on two you and won't let go. Looooves to hhhave her picture taken; we have lots of photo shoots with her.
4. Sebastian, 8 years old, wearing my bra. He is my personal favorite, I know I shouldn't have favorites but I can't help it. This kid is in love with me. He loves animals, the movie Madagscar; he is also really smart. But at the same time he is quite the trouble maker and says inappropriate things like call people fat to their faces. Hence the picture of him above.
5. Claudia; Camila's sister and Karla's half, 5 years old. She is from the other side of the family. Thinks she is incredibly cute.
6. Jose Antonio is at the end of the bench, he is 4 years old I think. I have no pictures of him alone. He is going to marry one of my baby girl cousins someday (they are from the other side of family), I decided this.

I have more cousins but they aren't as cute. Slash older.

We went to the beach for a week with these family friends we've known forever. It wasn't really the beach; we stayed on this island called Culebra off of PR. It was gorgeous, very picturesque. The house we stayed in was huge; it was on the water and had a little dock so we could hop on our friends' boat and motored over to the beaches.

Well, so Puerto Rico was great, as usual. I got home on July 17th. That meant half of the summer was left. Hmm, what did I do all that time? I saw my friends all the time, lots of time spent with Matt but I have no pictures of that because we two are the most unphotogenic people in the world, but I do have pictures with me and my four friends (I only have four friends, that's right).

I had been promising my friend Elizabeth ("Flem") a surprise birthday party for about a year. She turned 16 this summer, she is a younging, but I couldn't let her down. So I planned this party and it was amazing. There was a pinata (Helen, whose ingenious idea to get a pinata was- thats not gramatically correct I know):

water balloons and squirt guns and hoses, all my idea (Matt after I hosed him down while hitting the pinata):

Well, that was last Saturday. Now my summer is winding down. Matt left for college, so are a lot of other ex-seniors. But that means I'm a senior now, and lots of fun senior things are onn their way. School starts on Monday, but I feel like it has already started because I went there three times this week for SGA business and freshman orientation and etc. There I discovered that the fall show is Pride and Prejudice, which I am extremely excited about. In fact, I had Elizabeth come over yesterday and bring the movies. I watched all 6 hours of it in one day. And there has been much discussion about senior breakfast on Monday before school starts- there will be food and a DJ and we'll all get our senior shirts. And the senior prank, there are rumors about that too. So all in all, even though I've been trying to deny it for a long time, maybe I'm ready to go back to school? But then again, maybe I'm not.

Jun. 14th, 2005

11:09 am

I finished my last exam an hour and a half ago. Summer... finally... and yet, like Natalia was saying, I'm as busy as ever. But I wouldn't have it any other day. I might be working at my mom's office this summer, I'm going in today to learn the ropes. So then I'll be able to fund my trip through Europe next summer, perhaps I'm dreaming. I've been dreaming loads lately, especially about going to Yale, you see I got my Yale application and now it's lying open regally on my kitchen table to a page about residential colleges with images of buildings covered in ivy all over the place... So yes, I am dreaming. Next year will be my senior year and I will get into college and decided where to go and graduate and all of that good stuff. Lots of things to happen all in a year. Congratulations to all of the seniors that graduated or are going to graduate... I'm mighty proud. And I just said mighty, which kind of makes me chuckle.

So on Saturday we went to Lake Needwood and paddleboated and played lacrosse (me! playing sports! what a crazy concept! But I managed.)

Helen and Becca looking stylish in their life jackets:

I like the picture business, it is fun.

So since I got home today I've been really Ruta-nostalgic and looking at pictures reminiscing. I stumbled upon this one and was immediately blinded by the whitness, I just HAD to close my eyes! And then I looked again and realize it was just Ireland/Richard without a shirt. Other good Ruta memories that have been evoked: Jakob's flag, that was after reading Natalia's lj. I remember one day he told me he wouldn't wash it once he got home. Which I said was gross because he had all of these stains on it. He said each stain was a different memory, and to test his memory I asked him what that white-ish stain in the middle of the flag was from. He said that was when he tried to wash his flag with soap.

Well it's ridiculously hot today, at 10:15 am my car told me it was 95 degrees Fahrenheit, so I suppose it'll hit 100 or 105 pretty soon. I'm hitting up the pool today.

Jun. 11th, 2005

01:41 pm - Some might say we will find a brighter day.

The end of the year is... very nice. Exams have started. Everything is happening now, actually. Too bad I still have two more exams though.

Thursday: I didn't have a 5th period exam so I worked on the drama senior video because the drama picnic was that afternoon. Which was nice, including annual Needwood walk with Elizabeth, gettiing SuperSoaker'd, SuperSoaker in return, signing yearbooks, eating. And then Maddie left with my car keys, it was pretty cool, but we ended up going to Maddie's house to watch the senior video. I love drama board and old board/new board festivities.

Me and Liz on our walk (it's a pretty awful one):

Yesterday: Graduation, not that I graduated of course, but the whole day was devoted to Matthew. I hung out with several generations of the Zorns, they are quite an amusing crowd, I like any comments they make on race and such. Oh jews. Graduation was long and in a gigantic revivalist church called Jericho City of Praise- on the building they proclaimed in large letters. "Jesus is Our Lord!" The Jews really got a kick out of that. The graduation speaker was our Maryland Lt. Gov Michael Steele, which none of you guys will recognize, but he is a Republican and so people didn't expect much of him. But his speech wa refreshing and engaging, he is quite the comedic. I think he was my elementary school friend Xania Steele's dad. Post graduation, headed back to the Zorn residence, had a little family friend shindig, ate a lot of barbecue food and white chocolate mousse cake, played Cranium miniaturized (and won, of course). Then we went to Leon's graduation party. You have no idea who Leon is. Well he is Matt's friend. And his house is AMAZING, it is in Potomac (one of the rich parts of MoCo) and his house is huge with a spiral staircase and a bridge that connects two parts of the house and arcade games in the basement and a pool and a golf hole. We didn't go for long but it was nice nonetheless.

You must be bored to death with this recap of my life. My life is good. I'm happy for summer. I'm jealous of people going to Spain. Send me mail and especially postcards because I just love them postcards. I will someday soon update with an actually interesting entry, I promise.

Jun. 2nd, 2005

05:26 pm - God only knows what I'd be without you...

So happy June! I figured it was time for an update. I know, I fail. But I shall tell you things. Two Fridays ago was prom! I have only three pictures and none of them that actually have Matt in them turned out any good so I'll just show you the picture of me and later post one when he gets me his.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

So that's me, in all of my dream-dress-glory, with my green orchid corsage, looking not so hot, but I can keep it real. After pictures at my house were pictures at his, then we went to dinner at an uber fancy restaurant, then we went to prom and danced the night away, and then we went to post prom.

What else is new in my life? Seniors are done with school. And we're still stuck in school, but it's the homestretch- I've just got an art project and a TOK presentation today before exams begin. Tomorrow we are going to Six Flags for a physics fieldtrip, should be exorbitant amounts of fun. I do enjoy them roller coasters. Today... was pretty boring. But yesterday, oh boy, Alex got sick so I had to drive her home so I got to miss fourth period! And then afterschool me and the girls saw Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants which was better than I had expected it to be. Everything is so summery. Everything I've been doing since AP exams started in May. So I feel like I should be in school. Graduation and grad parties and pool parties and hanging out at Regal and drama picnics all need to start RIGHT NOW. Or else I will be very angry. I'm going to Puerto Rico this summer. No Spain, sadly. But it'll be fun, right? I'm in the mood for popsicles and sitting on my hammock with a neighbor or a sister and then walking barefoot through the neighborhood. Can't handle this school business anymore, it is lame & unnecessary.

May. 13th, 2005

06:02 pm - It's when you cry just a little but you laugh in the middle that you've made it.

So. I like May, I've decided. Less of that ambivalence, I guess. Wednesday I would have told you that exam-time isn't so great. But today... improvements.

Today I had my IB spanish exam at 6:30 am- ridiculously easy- and then I (and almost everyone else too) left the exam early. Eliz and I pseudo-frosted a cake for Skim's birthday, we are mathemagicians so we devised a clever message to write on the cake, which was "lim (our love) = d.n.e." (with "skim->17" under the lim) which in layman's term translates to "Limit as Skim approaches seventeen of our love does not exist." We thought it was very clever (yes dorky but we love it anyhow) and Big D (math teacher) got a kick out of it when we delivered it to that class. I love how we don't do anything in calc for the month of May but play Euchre with our math teacher and do crosswords. But, since we aren't required to go to class on exam days, Liz and I fleed. Well, we chilled with Sra. Solernou and then went to my house and made chocolate fondue and watched Degrassi. Then we bought carnations and went to Drama Inductions. Man you guys probably have no idea what all this stuff I'm talking about is. Drama inductions are... important to drama, which I love absolutely very much. And I made the drama Board of Directors for next year, which was very important to me and so today is very happy, even if anyone reading this may not understand the significance of that. And now I'm home. I want to go to my friend's house but my mom is guilt tripping me to stay home and eat paella with the family and some friends that may come. Well I'm excited about paella. And I guess I should bond even more with my older sister Vanessa, because she just got home from college and is leaving for Argentina in two weeks.

Well! That's all very summary-like. Which is very boring. I wish I had something interesting to tell you. Well I have a question, we were talking about this yesterday in art class (yesterday was even better than today. We played whiffleball in physics and my team of course won- I was team captain and had all the boys on my team- and my friend got the perfect prom date which made me happy)- back to art class. We had a discussion about relating numbers and letters with colors. Do you guys do that? I always think E as green. And the number 3, too. Weird, maybe. I could go through the whole alphabet. A- red. B- blue. C- yellow. Fine, I'll stop. Just wondering.

May. 6th, 2005

03:39 pm - and the four right chords could make me cry

I forgot my password. That's one of my excuses. I refigured it out today, though.

Any other excuses I would have would be even lamer than that one. I'm sorry kids. I've still been reading your livejournals (kind of stalkerlike eh?) See the thing is, I am morally against online journals, they seem kind of silly to me, lots of people make fools of themselves online because of these things. But I do this for you guys. Just my ruteros. Bex inspired me to update a long time ago, she talked about how she hasn't heard from me in a while. Well, the truth is, I have decided to become a hermit. No, I lied, I've just been busy with life. Anne also inspired me to update, I love that girl.

So life has been busy. There's lots to tell and no where to start. So I'll just ramble. It is May. May is good. Exam time is amazing except when I have to actually study for exams and then when I actually have to go to class and have no attention span whatsoever so learning is ultimately a big disaster. For example, I had two free periods today because people were out taking AP euro, so lots of gossip time. And to my IB friends world wide- man IB is a joke. At least the math methods test was, after taking calc that morning. So Bex, IB is centered in Wales (I think) and I find your people so funny. I get a big kick out of the exams. They write stuff like "Hence or otherwise" and spell them "litres" and "metres". Organization isn't spelled with an s, crazy British people!

And this one is for Natalia. We have a long-term sub for History class because my teacher had to go and get pregnant and give birth to stuff like babies. So we had been hoping he would be our HMS (no, he's not a ship, just a Hot Male Substitute) because he is just out of college. Well, he's kind of awkward looking but he is a cool guy. He had as introduce ourselves and an interesting fact. And I said, "MY name is Desiree and I dream of visiting Helsinki, Finland, someday."

Well soonish I am going to a lacrosse game, what a crazy sport, I've never gone to one before and its the last home game and I have a few friends on the team that we always make come to our plays so I feel like I owe them one. Oh sports. What a concept. I know I didn't write much about My Life, but I feel like I haven't talked to you guys in so long that I owe you this entry.

09:39 am - She musters a smile for his nostalgic tales.

Happy Monday! I'm having a nice extended weekend. The MCPS folks cancelled school AGAIN because it's supposed to snow a lot (but right now there is nothing whatsoever on the ground, it really makes me laugh). And we didn't have school Thursday or Friday because of snow either. Isn't that exciting? This weekend is just too cool.

09:17 pm - La tiene en la luna de Valencia.

So I'm pretty sketched out that I'm posting on here two days in a row, I'm becoming my worst nightmare. This is how addictions begin.

But today in history Ms. Little had this sort of bonus question as a Valentine's Day sort of present. First of all: If you could be any animal, what would it be? I said a nautilus, for multiple reasons. One, the nautilus is fascinating to watch. I promise I'm not just extremely dorky, because being one of these things would make me the most popular girl in school, that's how cool the nautilus is. If you're wondering what it is, go look it up, its the best organism since sliced bread, and I was only acquainted with it this summer when I was visiting my friend at the zoo (no, she's not an animal, but she worked in the Invertebrate section). Or better yet, come visit me and I will introduce you to the wonders of the nautilus at the National Zoo. Man, I could watch those things forever. And to add to the mystique that is the nautilus, what's it's plural form? Nautiluses? Nautili? The world will never know.

And then Little asked us, ok, so you can't be your first choice, so what animal would you be now? And I thought long and hard, and I choose to be a Liger, not just because Napoleon Dynamite likes it, but because it's bred for it's magical powers. And it's sweet to draw.

And then Little had to deprive us of our second favorite animal as well and asked us what you would be third. And I said a lobster, for obvious reasons, I was so surprised I hadn't thought of my crustacean alterego before. But nautili and ligers are quite fascinating creatures, so obviously I was a bit distracted.

Ok, there's a point to all this, besides me just being really psycho. She then has a little psychological interpretation of our choices, but I'm not going to explain it yet. Tell me your three and then I'll tell you what it means. And your choices don't have to be so obscure. (Helen wants to be a lion, I told her that was too incredibly boring, but she didn't listen.)

p.s. Nico wants to change our English Club Conference to Sunday the 27th, we'll need to consult Ped. And 4 days till New York extravaganza.
